Leopards slow Downs’ momentum

Downs were on an impressive winning streak that stretched all the way back in January before Leopards clawed their way back.

Mamelodi Sundowns are heading into the international break with a healthy four-point lead and two-game in hand in the DStv Premiership.

Despite the advantage, head coach Manqoba Mngqithi said his side should have extended their lead to six points after their 1-1 draw with Black Leopards on Sunday.

The Pretoria club went ahead in the 10th minute, thanks to Musa Lebusa’s goal but a late equaliser from Roderick Kabwe saw Leopards claw their way back to earn a draw.

After 18 games, the Brazilians are four points above second-place Golden Arrows and have not lost a game in the league.

“Today, we had a lethargic game that got us worried from the start of the game, but fortunately we got a goal from Musa.

“We got chances from breaks and I feel we should have capitalised but we did not take those chances. Even at half-time, we had a big fight because we seemed like a team that thinks we have already won the match,” Mngqithi said after the game.

“I am never at ease with a 1-0 lead, more especially against a side that plays counter-attacking football. I have said it during the week that throughout the world, it is very possible for a team in the bottom to take points from a side on top,” he said.

Before Sunday’s match, Downs were on an impressive winning streak that stretched all the way back in January.

“I must say that the intensity of the game was not what we are used to. Maybe we have played many games. It is very unfortunate for us not to win the game.

“To be honest, as much as they got a point, they never made any threat in our box. We have to take this on the chin and move on,” said Mngqithi.

Sundowns will next be in action after the international break against Al Hilal away in the CAF Champions League on 2 April.
