11th PSL title in Downs grasp
Goals from Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile were enough to hand Masandawana all the three points away from home.
Mamelodi Sundowns are edging closer to their 11th Premier Soccer League (PSL) following their hard-fought 2-1 win over Chippa United on Monday afternoon.
The Pretoria side registered their 13th win in the DStv Premiership as they completed the double over Chippa United.
Goals from Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile were enough to hand Masandawana all the three points away from home.
Sundowns now top the standings by 46 points, having played 20 games thus far. They are six points of second place Amazulu who have played two games more than the Pretoria giants.
With 10 games left in the DStv Premiership, the Brazilians are the only side who have not tasted defeat.
After the match, Downs Manqoba Mngqithi gave credit to Chippa’s goalkeeper Ismail Watenga.
“I think we made this game more difficult than it should have been. I think we got far too many one-against-one situations.
“Credit must also be given to Watenga, I think he played very well, but when you’re not shrewd, you end up getting a draw or losing a match like this one. Because to be honest the number of chances we created and at a certain point at half-time I was even worried. I have seen too many games like this,” Mnqithi told SuperSport TV after the match.
Sundowns wasted a lot of opportunities in the first half and should have had two or three goals.
“Where first-half you have so many chances and suddenly second-half, we didn’t have a good start and immediately we missed an opportunity to score was created on the opposite side,” he said.
A win away from home sees Sundowns well within touching distance of their 11th title. Mnqithi said a performance like this will ignite the fire ahead of their high profile Nedbank clash against Orlando Pirates this Thursday.
“I just appreciate that we’ve gone past, not many people will come here and go past easily, at this stage of the season, every game is important and we’re happy to go home with the three points,” Mnqithi added.
