Shooting near east school

A mother and daughter witnessed a shooting and managed to capture it on their car camera.

A woman and her 18-year-old daughter were left traumatised after being caught up in a shooting in Murrayfield in the east of Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon.

Jana van der Vyver and her daughter were driving on Natalie Street towards Clyde Street when they suddenly heard gunshots emanating from the direction they were headed.

“As I was driving I heard these blowing sounds,” she said.

“I was wondering if they were fireworks or gunshots.

“As I neared the stop sign, I saw these men shooting at a vehicle which was heading in our direction.”

Van der Vyver said she ordered her daughter to lower her head as she did the same while trying to drive the car.

As the shooting continued, she saw how a man shooting at the car gave chase on foot while another white car branded with a security company’s name followed.

“We drove in a different direction and I saw the two men getting into the security car,” she said.

“My daughter and I drove into a small street in the area where we sat and cried.

“It was really by God’s grace that we are alive.”

In video footage taken from Van der Vyver’s car, a man wearing black can be seen giving chase while another who was also giving chase, turns back to give chase in a white vehicle.

“This happened near the school,” she said.

“My concern was the kids. If they had walked out while the shooting was happening, they could have been caught in the crossfire, because it was at the time they were about to head home.”

It is unclear at this stage what the circumstances around the shooting were.

At the time of publishing, the Silverton police was not aware of the incident.
