Centurion factory engulfed in flames

Tshwane emergency services reported that half of the building caught fire, and its roof also collapsed when a fire broke out on Friday afternoon.

A massive fire broke out at a chemical factory in Centurion on Friday afternoon.

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson, Charles Mabaso, said the incident was reported at around 15:45 in Sunderland Ridge, Centurion.

“The service is currently attending a fire incident in Sunderland Ridge, where about 30 000 litres of ethanol (colorless flammable liquid) caught fire.

Upon arrival, the firefighters found that half of the building (Sprint Chemie factory) was on fire and the roof had already collapsed,” he said.

“The firefighters are busy fighting the blaze and have managed to contain it from spreading to the back of the factory where 50 000 litres of ethanol are contained in drums,” he said.

He said the cause of the fire had not yet been established.

Mabaso and Cert-SA emergency services, who also responded to the scene, reported that no one was injured in the fire.
