Passionate local designer wants to showcase local talents
The fashion show will be held at Mbombhi Street in Mamelodi West, section B3 for free, from 16:00 until late next Friday, 23 April.
The passion for vintage clothing has driven a young Mamelodi designer to organise a Street vintage fashion show called Street Cotton 2021.
Street Cotton is about giving young and upcoming designers and models an opportunity to showcase their artwork.
Abdul Maimane, organiser and co-founder of Street Cotton, said the street fashion show is also in conjunction with his 27th year birthday celebration next week.
Maimane said he wanted to celebrate his birthday with the community by giving young clothing designers and models an opportunity to showcase their work.
Street Cotton is a movement of designers, photographers, models and arts founded last year during the lockdown by Maimane and Mulligan Shaba.
Maimane’s passion for vintage clothing started at school in 2009.
The fashion show will be held at Mbombhi Street for everyone to see. There will be other designers from Mamelodi on the day who will be showcasing their work as well.
Maimane said the Street Cotton fashion show will be celebrated annually around April.
“Street Cotton also offers a helping hand to young models by boosting their confidence and preparing them to be independent when they are on stage,” said Maimane.
Maimane said he was inspired by clothing designers such as David Tlale.
His message to the youth of Mamelodi who wants to become clothing designers is that they can be anything they want in life as long as they believe in what they are doing.
Maimane is currently working at home and people can place their orders on Facebook and Instagram.
He concluded that the youth of Mamelodi must stand up and search for their talent and stop hanging out at street corners.
“Most importantly: stay away from drugs because drugs destroy lives,” he added.
The event will be held at Mbombhi Street in Mamelodi West, section B3 for free, from 16:00 until late next Friday, 23 April.
The theme for the street fashion show is strictly vintage and the best dresser will be awarded by Vintage Delegation.
