Tshwane metro awards bursaries to persons living with disabilities

“The City of Tshwane is looking forward to allocating more bursaries for people with disabilities and to supporting them in work exposure upon completion of their studies.”

The Tshwane metro awarded a total of 45 bursaries to students who had overcome significant hurdles in their quest for access to education while they lived with disabilities on Wednesday.

“The bursaries distributed form part of our ‘Changing Lives for a brighter Future’ theme,” the metro said.

A total of 123 bursaries were approved for the 2021 financial year, with 45 solely awarded to people living with disabilities.

Tshwane community and social development MMC Thabisile Vilakazi and corporate and shared services MMC Sylvester Phokoje facilitated the ceremony, alongside other city officials.

The metro said they had deliberately used a strategy that used a wide outreach campaign.

This was so they could reach a large number of persons with disabilities who were eligible to further their studies at institutions of higher learning.

The metro was also said to currently be in the process of finalising a bursary policy scheme for the students which would be detailed to fully cater to their needs.

The main aim of the scheme for people living with disabilities was expected to provide them with:

– Meaningful employment related opportunities in their field of study,

– Vacation employment and experiential training,

– An opportunity for practical training in the Tshwane metro upon completion of their qualifications.

“The metro is looking forward to allocating more bursaries for people with disabilities and to supporting them in work exposure upon completion of their studies.

“We are invested in the success of all our bursars and wish them well in pursuing their studies with diligence,” the statement concluded.
