Dogs homeless after owners were evicted
“The dogs are mourning. They sit in front of the gate all day and howl, waiting for their owners to fetch them.”
A Pretoria family had to give up their beloved pets after hard economic times had befallen them, a common occurrence in these tough times.
This was according to Cilla Trexler of Wollies animal shelter in the north of Pretoria, where the family’s four dogs are currently residing.
“These four dogs are healthy and well taken care of. I don’t think the owners would have given them up if they had any other choice,” Trexler told Rekord.
She said the dogs’ owners were forced to give them up after they were evicted from their rental home.
“They could no longer pay their rent. They had to move in with family and could not take their pets with them.”
Trexler said in recent months there have been more and more cases of animal owners forced to abandon their pets due to financial strain.
“There are so many people who have lost their jobs and income due to the pandemic and every day more animals are brought to the shelter.”
Trexler said her heart breaks for all the animals who comes into the shelter on a daily basis.
“It is especially hard to stop worrying about some, like these recent arrivals.”
Trexler said the four, recently homeless, dogs were very unhappy at the shelter.
“The dogs are in mourning. They sit in front of the gate all day and howl, waiting for their owners to fetch them.”
She said many animals, like these four dogs that come from loving homes – do not adapt well to life in a shelter.
Trexler said animals often become depressed, which can lead to their health declining.
She pleaded with members of the community not only for food and donations for Wollies, but also for help in adopting animals at the shelter.

The dogs that were recently brought in were especially in need of a good home.
“We know it is difficult to take in four animals, but we would like to try for them to be adopted together,” said Trexler.
“They are inseparable. They groom each other and mourn together.”
