Man appears in court for setting girlfriend on fire
He was denied bail after he made a brief appearance at the Bronkhorspruit magistrates court.

A man accused of trying to kill a woman by setting her on fire in the east of Pretoria was denied bail on Tuesday, police confirmed.
The man appeared before the Bronkhorspruit magistrate’s court for formal bail application, said Boschkop police spokesperson Sergeant Yeroboam Mbatsane.
A case of attempted murder was opened for investigation, he said.
“About two weeks ago, the victim (the girlfriend of the accused) alleged she was walking home around 20:00 in Lethabong, Donkerhoek when she came across her boyfriend. The boyfriend had a two-litre bottle with him which contained petrol. He then started pouring the petrol on his girlfriend before setting her alight,” Mbatsane said.
Community members came to her aid.
The boyfriend fled the scene immediately after setting her on fire.
Mbatsane said the woman was taken to Mamelodi hospital with serious burn wounds.
The man was arrested the following day after the police received a tip-off from the community about his whereabouts.
“The 32-year-old charged with attempted murder will remain in police custody until his next court appearance.”
