Watch out for cable thieves in north

Cable theft in Akasia apparently contributed to power failures in the area on Monday.

On Monday several suburbs in Akasia were left in the dark allegedly due to a fault at a substation and also cable theft in Karenpark.

Residents reported the cable theft on the corner of Doreg Street and Heinrich Avenue where a deep trench was dug.

“Only a small piece of the electric cable was cut,” said ward councillor Isak Pietersen.

Early morning around 03:00, Amandasig, Chantelle, Karenpark and other areas were left without power for several hours.

Pietersen later reported on a community WhatsApp group that the outage was due to a “trip at a substation in The Orchards”.

Resident in Karenpark, Othello Mohlabane, said while most suburbs’ power was restored around 10:00, his street was still without power.

Mohlabane reported the trench, where the cable was stolen from, on social media.

Community watch groups in the area issued alerts to residents to be on the lookout for suspect cable thieves.

Akasia police spokesperson Sergeant Matsobane Mabusela reminded residents to report crimes, such as thefts, to their nearest police stations.

He urged residents to also join CPFs to help police keep a lookout for criminals in the area.
