Hearty meal served with campaign

“Sometimes victims don’t want to expose their family members. They don’t want to have charges laid against them, but most of the time they do want help.”

Residents from Olievenhoutbosch received a hearty meal as part of a recent domestic violence campaign.

Olievenhoutbosch police, CPF, Olievenhoutbosch By Women Network and Khuluma Family Counselling, joined forces to host a soup kitchen as part of a Domestic Violence campaign.

Sergeant Pretty Mokadi, spokesperson for the Olievenhoutbosch police, said Olievenhoutbosch By Women Network consists of voluntary police officials from their station.

Khuluma is a non-profit organisation consisting of social workers based at Olievenhoutbosch, Erasmia, Wierdabrug and Lyttelton police stations. The organisation forms part of the police’s victim empowerment programme.

Mokadi said clothes, 50 packets of sanitary pads and educational pamphlets about domestic violence were handed out to community members.

“We were also able to provide community members with some soup and bread from our soup kitchen,” she said.

“The community was encouraged to report domestic violence to the police station. We have also informed them that free family counselling was available should a family need further assistance.”

She said Khuluma provides this service to community members.

Mokadi said children were advised to report domestic violence to the CPF. If possible, they could also come to the police station and report the matter.

“That way parents can be saved and gender-based violence can be addressed. Sometimes victims don’t want to expose their family members. They don’t want to have charges laid against them, but most of the time they do want help.

“And most of the time that help is much needed. Counselling and therapy often helps the family members a lot.”
