Brooklyn pubs and taverns commit to help fight crime
The theft and robbery of cellphones are still prevalent in the area known as “the strip” on Lynnwood Road.
Pub and tavern owners in Lynnwood Road, known as “the strip”, in Brooklyn have promised to work with the police to curb crime and adhere to Covid-19 regulations on Thursday, following a meeting with them.
“The meeting was arranged to address numerous concerns over crime in the vicinity, noise complaints and contravention of the disaster management act,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Webster Scheepers.
“Theft and robbery of cellphones are still prevalent in the area, due to young people that leave premises to use their cellphones outside.
“This makes them easy targets for opportunistic criminals.”
Scheepers said pubs and taverns would assist with awareness campaigns to educate young people to limit the use of cellphones in public.
He said those who ordered a taxi through a cellphone app were encouraged to write down the taxi’s registration number so that they did not need to hold their cellphones in their hands while waiting for the taxi to arrive.
“Better crowd management will also be implemented outside their premises while clients wait to enter the premises,” he said.
“Only a limited number of clients can be accommodated inside the premises at a time. Those that are waiting outside will be reminded to keep on wearing their masks and to keep social distance.

“All taverns and pubs will implement registers to keep track of how many clients enter and leave their premises.”
He said the traders pledged to be compliant with the liquor act and to close in time, to allow their clients to be at home before the curfew.
“Owners were very positive with the outcome of the meeting. They say that it is more productive to work with the SAPS rather than be on the wrong side of the law.”
Brooklyn CPF chairperson Marlene Kruger also commended the initiative, saying that all the concerns of the community had been addressed.
She emphasised the importance of parents giving sound advice and talking to young people about using alcohol responsibly.
