Biker (52) nabbed doing 209km/h on highway

He was subsequently detained at the Lyttelton police station.

A 52-year-old biker was arrested for doing 209km/h on the R21 freeway at the weekend.

The biker was subsequently detained at the Lyttelton police station, according to Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Sello Maremane.

He was charged with reckless and negligent driving, alternatively exceeding the prescribed speed limit.

The man’s speed was the highest recorded among the 11 motorists arrested for speeding by the high-speed unit along major routes and freeways at the weekend.

The lowest speed recorded was 160km/h on the N14 by a 35-year-old man.

According to Maremane, the age of the speedsters ranged between 24 and 68.

The rest of the drivers were detained at various police stations including Wierdabrug, Bronkhorstspruit and Olifansfontein.

He said the specialised unit clamped down on the speedsters using some of the latest technological devices such as moving violation recorders.
“It records the average speed measured over a minimum of 500 meters. The event is recorded and downloaded for investigation and prosecution purposes,” Maremane said.

He called on motorists to adhere to speed limits for the safety of their passengers and other road users.

“Excessive speeding contributes significantly to the high number of road fatalities in the province,” he said.

Maremane said provincial traffic police would ensure that high-speed operations were intensified in an effort to enhance road safety.
