State of Thaba Tshwane roads upset residents

Thaba Tshwane residents dubbed the roads in the military neighbourhood highway to hell.

The state of roads in the Thaba Tshwane neighbourhood is causing upset among residents.

Shirley and Chadwick Alexander, residents of the neighbourhood, said due to potholes motor vehicles are forced to drive next to the road on certain portions of Petrus Liebenberg Street.

“Potholes don’t get repaired. Our roads are in a terrible state. And the damage it causes to motor vehicles is astronomical,” complained Shirley.

“From time-to-time they fill the holes with stones, which cause even more damage to motor vehicles,” said Chadwick.

He said once a few cars drove over it, “the entire road was scattered with stones”.

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It has become nearly impossible to drive in Johannes Celliers and Petrus Liebenberg roads, where chunks of road remained between potholes.”

“It is heartbreaking to see the current state that the infrastructure in Tshaba Tshwane is in.

“During the 21 years that I have lived here, the area has gradually slipped into disarray and utter neglect with no maintenance being done whatsoever.”

Local ward councillor Ina Strijdom said she had received “many complaints” about the poor state the roads were in.

“There is, however, nothing the metro can do about it because the roads in Thaba Tshwane falls under the jurisdiction of the department of public works and infrastructure,” she said.

Spokesperson for the department of public works and infrastructure Thami Mchunu said a technical assessment of roads within the Thaba Tshwane precinct had shown these roads had to be upgraded.

“Repairing the roads will be a fruitless expenditure as the current condition requires major refurbishment or reconstruction owing to severe dilapidation.”

Mchunu said the department will engage the department of defence to collaborate in planning and sourcing capital funding for the refurbishment of all damaged roads in the Thaba Tshwane precinct.
