Fire season in full flame north of Pta
Firefighters responded to two fires on Sunday afternoon in Wonderboom and Montana.
The Sinoville Fire Fighting Association (SBBV) this week appealed to residents in the area not to leave any unattended fires, as the fire season had already begun.
SBBV spokesperson Zenobia Loock du Plessis said firefighters responded to a fire near a Makro store in Wonderboom on Sunday.
“The fire was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade and our local responders,” she said.
No damage to buildings in the vicinity was reported.
The second fire was put out in a field in Veronica Street, Montana.
“The SBBV is appealing to people to take precautions against fires, especially during the next few months between May and September. Be on the lookout for open fires,” said Loock du Plessis.
“We cannot just ignore fires made by squatters and vagrants. Inform your CPF of the fire – they will act judiciously and know if that lone fire is the work of a deliberate criminal offender or just recklessness.”
Loock du Plessis said that with the turn of the season, dead leaves and dry grass were also a problem.
“We want to keep our yards and properties clean, but under no circumstances should we burn leaves and garden waste in our yards.”
She said residents must first obtain a permit to burn garden waste in an area that has been approved as a fire strip.
“The applications for permits can be made with the SBBV. The burning of waste wood, block fires, grazing camps and crop residues may only be undertaken when the fire index is less than 45,” explained Loock du Plessis.

“The SBBV wishes all our members and residents in the north a warm and safe winter. We would like to invite everyone to visit the SBBV’s website and become part of the team. Our members are volunteers who serve to save others and their property.”
SBBV is a non-profit and public benefit organisation.
