Bullets fly in east high-speed car chase

Three suspects were arrested after a high-speed chase ensued through the suburb streets.

Three men were arrested after a high-speed car chase which led to a shootout in the east of Pretoria on Thursday afternoon.

Around 12:00, a vehicle was identified attempting to gain entry into a residential property in Faerie Glen.

“Brinant security received a tip-off of an attempted break-in in Faerie Glen which involved three men in a white Audi,” police said.

“An immediate lookout was posted for the vehicle. Members of Brinant security spotted the vehicle in the Garsfontein area and began to follow it,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

“The security officers giving chase called for backup, however, the suspects began firing shots at them when they discovered they were being followed.”

Miller said a high-speed chase ensued through the suburb streets with shots being exchanged between the suspects and the security officers.

The suspects were eventually stopped at the intersection of Delfi Avenue and Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

“Upon securing three suspects from the vehicle, it was found that one had been injured in the leg, and was taken to hospital under police guard.

“Inside the vehicle, police found two unlicensed firearms together with equipment used to break into homes and electronic household goods suspected of being stolen,” Miller said.

The three suspects were arrested and will be charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, and possession of house-breaking implements.

“We are investigating the possibility of linking them to further crimes around the east of Pretoria,” said Miller.

The suspects will appear in court soon.

“We would further like to thank all the members who responded and ultimately ensured that these suspects were arrested.“

Garsfontein police station commander Colonel Kervin Solomons said that the success was due to the close working relationship between police and security companies.
