Robbers target pedestrians more often

More and more pedestrians are being targeted for their handbags and cellphones.

If you hear noises outside, please don’t go out and investigate on your own, Lyttelton police station warned residents this week.

“Rather activate your panic button and get in touch with your security company and stay on the line with them,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

The warning comes as the number of housebreakings and street robberies has been increasing in the area over the past few weeks.

Miller said most housebreakings occur during the early morning hours and late at night.

“The suspects outside will often create a diversion to get you to open your door. That can then develop into a house robbing situation.”

Miller said police noticed a rise in pedestrians being robbed.

Handbags, cellphones and laptops were being targeted.

In the CBD and John Vorster Road bridge area, Miller said, there are two modus operandi being followed.

“In the first one, a pedestrian is merely approached from behind where they then just rip off your backpack or handbag and run off with it.

“The second is where suspects drive around in a motor vehicle and then stop right next to you. They are often armed with weapons such as firearms or knives. They will then approach you and threaten you forcing you to hand over your belongings.”

Miller said police advised that should someone find themselves in that situation, to remain calm.

“If you are not in a life-threatening situation, cooperate fully with the suspects. Your life is worth more than your property.”

He said police also encouraged community members to get involved with the CPF.

“Go get the CFP’s contact numbers on their Facebook webpages and make sure you are in regular contact with your security company. Make sure your alarm systems are up and running.”

Miller said since winter is approaching and probably loadshedding as well, “make sure your phones and batteries are charged and check your alarm systems regularly”.
