AfriForum Centurion branch tackles old military cemetery in clean-up action
"AfriForum will continue to take ownership of our heritage and protect it."

The AfriForum branch in Centurion together with members of Order of the Bush Hat, cleaned the Thaba Tshwane old military cemetery in Voortrekkerhoogte on Saturday, 24 April.
The Order of the Bush Hat is a veterans’ organisation.
The cemetery was in a terrible state as building materials and household rubbish was dumped there illegally, with overgrown vegetation and open fires often created.
The Centurion branch used a tractor and mower, an industrial lawnmower and many bush cutters to cut the grass neatly and remove some of the bushes.

Bags full of rubbish were picked up and removed.
“The area on Valhalla’s side has unfortunately turned into an illegal landfill. It is shocking to see how this cemetery has deteriorated and is just being left to decay further,” said JP Nel, AfriForum’s district co-ordinator for greater Pretoria south.
“AfriForum will continue to take ownership of our heritage and protect it.
“Projects like these are very important because community members still want to visit their loved ones who rest here.”

Centurion branch chairperson, André de Bruyn said that it was a great joy to embark on this project.
“Men and women who last saw each other on the border 34 years ago, have joined hands again today to work together.
“AfriForum’s Centurion branch would like to thank everyone for their participation and hard work,” he said.
