Shootout in the north as courier vans targeted by robbers

Around the same time of the shootout between police and courier robbers in Sinoville, another courier van was robbed in Akasia.

Three suspected courier van robbers were caught and one was still on the run after a shootout with police in Sinoville on Monday morning.

Around the same time of the shootout, another courier vehicle was allegedly robbed in Amandasig, Akasia.

Sinoville police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said in the first-mentioned case, police had chased after four armed men after the suspects robbed a courier vehicle driver in Van der Schyff Street, Wonderboom.

“The police officers happened to be patrolling in the area when the robbery took place.”

The chase ended in Sefako Makgatho (Zambezi) Drive between Vinko and Marija streets, around 10:50, where there was a shootout between police and the suspects.

“Three were arrested on the scene and one managed to escape,” said Van Dyk.

Residents were warned to be on the lookout for the fourth suspect, a tall man of slender build, last seen wearing a red hat and blue overall trousers and jacket.

The man was armed and dangerous.

In a separate unrelated robbery in Amandasig, a courier van was targeted in Besembos Street.

CPF Sector 2 chairperson Paulina Seboloki said two men and two women were allegedly involved in this robbery.

“The suspects were armed and they robbed a courier van waiting in front of a house in Besembos Street.”

The robbers allegedly fled with three packages from the courier van.

“The suspects were driving a white (VW) Jetta, but we don’t have any other information about the vehicle involved,” said Seboloki.
