Sundowns embarrasses Pirates again to reclaim top spot

Sunday was Downs third win over the Bucs in the current season, a double in the league, with a cup win.

Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Orlando Pirates 3-0 to return to the top of the DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

The match was played at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto and saw Downs defeating the Pirates twice in a space of two weeks. Mid-April, the Pretoria giants brushed aside Pirates 4-1 in the quarter-final of the Nedbank cup.

Sunday’s clash was a must for both teams. Pirates needed to win to revive their title aspiration while Sundowns were desperate to end their four game winless run.

The first half had all the drama but produced no goal as both sides went to the half locked at 0-0.

The second half saw Downs up the tempo by putting pressure on the unsettled Bucs defence.

About 10 minutes into the second half, Sundowns were awarded a penalty when the referee adjudged Innocent Maela to have handled the ball from Peter Shalulile’s shot. Ricardo Nascimento made no mistake by sending the keeper the wrong way.

Peter Shalulile made it 2-0 in the 76th minutes after Pirates skipper Thulani Hlatswayo made a mistake.

Lyle Lakay finished the game off with a sublime free-kick to give the Brazilians all the three points away from home.

The next game for Mamelodi Sundowns is against Maritzburg United on Wednesday afternoon.
