TUT students busted for alleged computer theft
The suspects told police that they had stolen the computers at the TUT campus and they were also students there.
Two Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students were caught red-handed by Pretoria West police stealing computers from the varsity’s computer lab last week Monday.
“Officers were on their daily patrol when they spotted a suspicious red Toyota Etios in the early hours of last week Monday, near the robot of the campus,” said police spokesperson Constable Sibongile Vuma.
One of the suspects, however, managed to flee when police approached them.
Vuma said when police stopped the car to search it, they found six suspected stolen computers.
“When the suspects were asked where they were taking the computers to, they failed to answer. Eventually, they told police that they had stolen the computers from the TUT campus and they were also students there.”
She said the suspects gained access to the computer lab by cutting the burglar bars with a metal hacksaw.
“Police confirmed with officials at the campus that a break-in did happen.”
Pretoria West station commander Colonel Michelle Toohey applauded police for swift action and encouraged them to continue doing stop-and-searches to reduce any criminal activities in the area.
“As the police, we will continue to ensure we stick to our mandate by ensuring residents live in a crime-free area.”
TUT had yet to provide comment by the time of publication.
