Hunt on after cheetah escapes from Rietvlei reserve

"Helicopters and veterinary services are currently looking for her and we hope to dart her to get her back safely."

A cheetah escaped from Rietvlei Nature Reserve on Tuesday evening.

The two-year-old female cheetah, Njozi, who was released into the greater reserve in September last year, climbed underneath the fence of the reserve.

Tshwane MMC for environment and agriculture management Dana Wannenburg said that responders were currently on the lookout for her.

“She escaped from the reserve via a porcupine hole during the evening.

“We believe that she will be easily tracked down and taken back to the reserve soon as she has a collar around her neck.

“Helicopters and veterinary services are currently looking for her and we hope to dart her to get her back safely,” he said.

Njozi was relocated to Rietvlei from the Western Cape in August 2020, where she was kept in a boma for a month before she was released into the reserve.
