Stay safe against fires this winter

A fire ban has been imposed in the Apies River and Sinoville Fire Fighting Association precinct from May 1 to October 31.

The Sinoville Fire Fighting Association (SBBV) said open fires would not be permitted this winter.

SBBV spokesperson Zenobia Loock du Plessis said a fire ban had been imposed by the association from May 1 to October 31.

“With the change of season, open fires are especially dangerous, and that is why the ban was imposed in the SBBV and Apies River area,” said Loock du Plessis.

She said wintertime in Gauteng, with its strong winds and dry conditions, was particularly prone to veld fires.

“No fire pits or garden refuse may be burned. If anyone has to burn refuse during this time, they will need to get a permit.”

Loock du Plessis reminded that applications for permits could be made with the SBBV.

Applicants may visit their website at www.sbbv.co.za for more information.

The SBBV firefighters attended an event at the weekend, where they addressed residents in the north of Pretoria about fire safety.

The event was held on May 1, at Hillside Golf Course and was attended by police, firefighters and other emergency services.

SBBV held a demonstration to explain safety regulations and show the protective gear and tools needed when fighting fires.

Part of firefighters’ training involves knowing how to free accident victims from vehicle wrecks.

“From all of us at SBBV, we wish our communities will have a warm and safe winter this year,” said Loock du Plessis.
