Full-time classes for primary school learners on cards
Education department is looking at primary school learners possibly returning to class full-time.
The Education Department is looking at possibly ditching rotational learning and getting all primary school learners back in class full-time.
“We are investigating this possibility due to the learning losses suffered as a result of the coronavirus pandemic,” the department said in a statement ahead of schools reopening on Monday.
Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said this issue will form part of the council of education ministers’ two-day meeting that will be held on Thursday and Friday.
The meeting will discuss issues affecting the basic education sector.
He said until the council comes to a decision, schools will continue to apply the rotational learning system.
“Health and safety protocols will remain in place with social distancing and washing of hands and sanitising being adhered to at all times.”
In October last year, the department said the rotational learning system seeing learners go to school once or twice a week, was ineffective.
Mhlanga said teachers had reported that the younger children were forgetting their schoolwork.
The council was also to discuss issues of bullying and violence in schools.
“In the first term, the sector experienced several tragedies that resulted in the loss of lives.”
As the second term begins, Mhlanga urged learners to conduct themselves in a respectful manner and concentrate on their studies.
“The department is also preparing for a vaccination programme that will target people over 60 and employees at risk (such as teachers over a certain age) who have been identified as essential workers.”
