Laundry machines for the homeless

The showers and laundry room will give them a chance to wash their clothes as well as bathing.

Drugs addicts and the homeless in Mamelodi will be able to wash and wear clean clothes every day, thanks to an Armscor donation.

Thandanani Drop Inn Centre in Mamelodi East received equipment including two laundry machines from Armscor as part of the homeless programme.

The generous donations also came with other much-needed tools including 20 laptop computers, a fridge, two gas stoves, 10 cooking pots and three diesel power generators.

Thabo Kgotsi of the centre said the organisation received the much-needed tools that would help the homeless and other social ills in the community.

“Most of our clients are drug addicts and homeless. They come to the centre almost every day, wearing the same clothes. We are happy that now they will be able to shower and wash their clothes.”

He said the centre had three community programmes; the homelessness programme, anti-drug abuse programme and the after-school and school holiday programme,” said Kgotsi.

“The laptops donated to the centre will assist children with ITC skills,” said Kgotsi.

The three diesel generators, 10 pots and the two gas stoves will assist with power when it comes to loadshedding with our daily feeding scheme for the homeless and for after-school meal preparation.

Kgotsi said those they help were drug addicts who were also homeless.

The centre decided to build showers, bathrooms and laundry rooms to help the homeless when they come to the centre.

“The anti-drug abuse programme has a recovery programme and assists ex-drug users to reclaim their lives as well as the homeless to reunite with their loved ones,” Kgotsi.

“We will stop at nothing to make sure that we have a drug-free community and we are also assisting foreigners too,” said Kgotsi.

The centre encouraged other drug users and the homeless to come and get the help they needed to reclaim their lives.

He said that most of the people using the centre had some talents “and we do not want see the talent go to waste”.

Obakeng Montsho from Armscor said once a request was received from the Thandanani centre and as part of the company’s corporate social investment, they decided to step in.

“Aligning them with what we offer to NPOs and we saw it fit to give them a helping hand,” said Montsho.

Thandanani offices are in Mamelodi East next to Rethabile community hall. Thabo Kgotsi may be contacted on 078-157-2417.
