Four cuffed over unlicensed firearms in west
One of the firearms which were recovered was said to belong to the Tshwane metro police department.
Four people were arrested after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearms by the Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) in Atteridgeville.
TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the first arrest was made when members attached to the tactical unit received a tip-off about a male suspect who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Friday afternoon.
“The TMPD tactical unit members acted swiftly on the information provided and a suspect matching the description was spotted along Sekhu and Maunde streets in Atteridgeville,” he said.
“When the suspect saw the officers, he tried to run but was immediately apprehended.”

Mahamba said the suspect was found in possession of a Glock 19 pistol and ammunition when he was searched.
“The firearm was checked and it was discovered that it belonged to the TMPD and was reported stolen in 2018.”
Further information led officers to three more suspects who were reported to be driving a white Toyota Avanza in the same area.

“The said vehicle was spotted and stopped with three male occupants,”
Mahamba said, adding that they were searched and found in possession of two illegal firearms and ammunition.

All four suspects faced charges of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition while the recovered firearms were expected to be investigated further.

“Well done to the TMPD tactical unit members for their swift response,” Mahamba said.
