Laudium man caught with unlicensed firearm, ammo

In the past week, at least 40 firearms and more than 480 rounds of ammunition were recovered by police as part of their plan to decrease the number of aggravated crimes.

A 29-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Sunday morning in Laudium.

The arrest happened on the R55 road while police were performing visibility patrols around Laudium.

“Police spotted a suspicious silver Chevrolet Aveo driving recklessly on the R55 road in the early hours of the morning,” said Laudium police spokesperson Sergeant Simon Chokoe.

He said the vehicle was followed until it was cornered.

“Upon searching the vehicle, a firearm and one magazine with 10 live rounds were found on the passenger. The driver was arrested after he failed to account for the firearm and live ammunition.”

Laudium police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Margaret Nkwane commended the police for their swift response.

“SA police will conduct more patrols and increase their visibility around Laudium to ensure that our community is safe,” she said.
