Moriri aims to improve Downs reserve team

The former Sundowns midfielder revealed the importance of having an attitude of achieving victory before taking on your opponents.

The Mamelodi Sundowns Diski team coach Surprise Moriri is hoping his team will be more ruthless in the coming games.

His side won 6-0 against Tshakhuma FC in Polokwane on Sunday to remain part of the top in the DStv Diski Challenge Rewired competition.

Moriri’s troops took advantage of the opportunity to score and made no mistakes as they bounced back from their defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.

“Our plan going into this game was like any other that we’ve played before. We knew that we were going to create chances, our challenge was to convert those chances especially in the first half because we let the teams off the hook in the first half [then] second half it becomes difficult because you find that the opponents end up having a belief that they can get something out of the games,” he said.

The former Sundowns midfielder revealed the importance of having an attitude of achieving victory before taking on your opponents.

“Before the game, we knew that it was important for us to win the game. First to win the game and second if there is an opportunity for goals you have to score goals.”

In Sunday’s match, Sundowns went into the first half with a 1-0 goal advantage but were let down by their finishing, however, the second half was filled with moments of brilliance from Sanele Khumalo and Musa Mdhluli with the coach singing them praises.

“I must say that Sanele Khumalo and Musa Mdhluli on the right were very instrumental in making sure that we continue creating those chances.”

The reserve team is placed in a good position that could see them play in the semi-finals this season in the DStv campaign, however, it will not be an easy game against Soweto giants Orlando Pirates in their next encounter.

“Going into the game against Pirates, there’s only one thing that we need to make sure that we go through to the semi-finals which is a win. A draw is not enough, we just need to win the game,” said Moriri.

Mamelodi Sundowns Reserves play against Orlando Pirates on Saturday at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, the game will kick off at 10:00.
