West pupil hit by stray bullet in classroom
The stray bullet was shot from the street and penetrated through the classroom window and hit a learner on her back.
A grade 10 learner was wounded after she was struck by a stray bullet at a school in Lotus Gardens on Tuesday.
The Fusion Secondary School pupil was hit by a bullet following a shooting outside the school.
“The department is aware and saddened by the incident involving a grade 10 learner at Fusion Secondary School who was allegedly shot on 11 May 2021 during break time,” said Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona.
He said that the violence or shooting did not happen inside the school premises nor did it involve any learner of the said school.
“The stray bullet was shot from the street and penetrated through the classroom window and hit a learner on her back. Subsequently, the learner who got hit by the bullet was accompanied by her friend to the admin block to report the injury. The principal attended to the child in the sick room to determine what happened,” Mabona said.
First aid was applied at the advice of the paramedics who were immediately called.
Mabona said the grade 10 pupil was receiving medical attention in hospital.
“We can also confirm that the police are currently investigating circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. We strongly condemn senseless acts of violence which threaten the safety of our learners in and around our schooling environment which compromises their education,” he said.
The department has dispatched officials from the psycho-social unit to render counselling services to the school and the wounded learner’s family.
Following the incident, the Educators’ Union of South Africa called for the temporary closure of the school.
“The Educators’ Union of South Africa condemns the principal of Fusion Secondary School in Lotus Gardens, Pretoria who forced teachers and learners to go back to class after a grade 10 learner at the school was shot by a stray bullet during a shooting that occurred outside the school today.
“We further call for a temporary closure of the school until all teachers and learners receive counselling,” the union said in a statement.
