Seniors exercise to keep healthy and strong

The club has since stopped exercising due to the national lockdown regulations but since the adjustment of levels, it's time to get back to work and start exercising again.

Senior citizens in Mamelodi are invited to come back and start exercising again to keep fit and healthy.

Gogo Sarah Shonisane (68), founder of Shonisani Football club for senior citizens, said the club has stopped exercising due to the national lockdown regulations, but since the adjustment of the levels, it’s time to get back to work and start exercising again.

Shonisani from Mamelodi West, section B3, said sport is for everyone – young and old.

The team will resume training at the Muckleneuk sport grounds on Monday.

According to the founder of the team, they are looking for senior citizens from the age 50 and upwards.

“Training runs from 08:30 to 10:00 from Monday to Wednesday,” she said.

Many senior citizens find themselves going to hospitals and clinics complaining about body aches and pains, blood sugar and high blood pressure.

“Exercise could help alleviate many citizens’ health problems and helps to keep them healthy and strong.

“Most of the players who joined the team stopped complaining about aches and were feeling healthy.

“Sitting at home and doing nothing especially for senior citizens is not healthy,” said Shonisani.

She said joining the club also fights boredom, it helps with getting fresh air and it is fun to meet new and old friends.

Shonisani added that her blood pressure used to be high and she used to sweat a lot, but since she started training it has decreased and she is healthy and strong and doctors no longer complain about her health.

“The doctors have encouraged her to continue training,” she said.

She concluded that exercise helps the healing process and reduce visits to the doctor.

“The team also pleads with local businessmen to help with training equipment especially donations of soccer boots, because the senior citizens can’t afford to buy their own boots with little that they get from their social grant,” said Shonisani.

The team urged local businesses and others in and around Mamelodi to help with money or sponsorships.

“The soccer boots will sharpen our dribbling skills as well as kicking long-distance shots. Most of the senior citizens kick the ball with running shoes and often get hurt as they kick the ball,” she said.

Shonisani concluded by encouraging senior citizens from Nellmapius and Eersterust to start their own teams so they could compete with each other.
