Car smashes through entrance at north shopping centre

The 65-year old driver was safely removed from scene with the help of bystanders and emergency services.

Shoppers in the north of Pretoria were left in shock on Wednesday afternoon when a car drove into the entrance of a shopping centre.

At 15:20 emergency services were called to the scene at Kolonnade Retail Park in Montana to assist an elderly driver involved in the accident.

The 65-year old driver, who had apparently suffered a heart condition, had driven into the entrance of the Pick n Pay Hyper store.

“It appears the driver went straight through the first open doors of the store, crashing into the second doors at the entrance,” said spokesperson for the Sinoville Firefighters Association, Zenobia Loock-du Plessis.

Local firefighters, Medi-Edge, other emergency personnel and helpful bystanders rushed to assist the driver involved in the accident.

One of the bystanders reported on social media that the car had started burning and it and people on scene had to rush to help remove the elderly driver from the vehicle.

“The SBBV assisted on scene as there was a big oil spill from the car,” Loock-du Plessis said.

“The firefighters assisted in the clean-up and fire prevention.”

Medi-Edge emergency services treated the driver for moderate injuries as well as his medical condition on the scene, before rushing him to a nearby hospital.

Kolonnade Retail Park management said they would soon issue a statement on the accident.

No other injuries were reported on the scene.
