Cops warn over vehicle theft spike in Pta North

“Vehicles are being stolen almost every day.”

Pretoria North police have issued a stern warning to motorists over a recorded spike in the theft of motor vehicles in the area.

“I would like to inform our community about the high rate of theft of motor vehicles in the area,” police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said.

Vehicles reportedly being targeted included Fiat Unos, Toyota Tazzes and Nissan NP200s.

“These vehicles are being stolen almost every day,” she said.

Miyen further advised motorists, particularly those who drove these “high-risk” vehicles, to install gear-locks, immobiliser units and steering or pedal locks.

“This will definitely help because it is getting out of hand,” she said.

During the release of the latest crime statistics, police minister Bheki Cele said the overall number of theft of vehicles and motorcycles which had been recorded from 1 January to 31 March 2021 had dropped by 17.2%.

“We owe this to a proactive and preventative policing strategy which is realised through among other things, increased police visibility,” he said.
