Central police identify more crime hotspots

Many young people prefer to meet each other outside their apartments and criminals are aware of this.

Pretoria Central police have identified more crime hotspots within the city.

Speaking at the Sammy Marks Square on Wednesday, Pretoria Central station commander Brigadier Moses Dladla said students and young working professionals were being targeted the most.

“Most of the armed robberies happened outside apartments around the Burgers Park area. Many young people prefer to meet each other and spend hours outside, especially at night,” he said.

“Criminals are aware and they also make small groups and sit around waiting for the perfect opportunity to pounce.

Dladla also stressed about unsafe parking areas.

“Some apartments don’t have enough parking spots so visitors will park outside and wait inside their vehicles. This creates an opportunity for criminals because they can see the occupant/s are on their gadgets and not paying attention to their surroundings,” he said.

“Don’t sit inside your vehicles in unsafe areas and always look for a safer parking spot, which is secured to avoid being a victim.”

Dladla also urged people to avoid Wi-Fi hotspots at night.

“Although common robberies have declined, we still get young people getting robbed at these hotspots where their phones and laptops get stolen.”

Regarding theft out of motor vehicles, Dladla said a team was established to deal with these sort of crimes.
