Crime awareness campaign at Rietgat
“We know that you know these criminals and we need you to help us to fight crime as a collective.”
About 5 000 pamphlets dealing with anything from drugs and alcohol abuse to crimes such as gender-based violence and robberies were distributed during a crime awareness campaign by the Rietgat police last week.
The campaign was held in conjunction with Gauteng Community Safety and various other law enforcement entities.
“The campaign’s purpose was to raise awareness and educate the community about the crime patterns of where they live, walk, work, learn, shop, drive and have fun,” said police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleke.
The campaign targeted hotspots in all five sectors where the Rietgat police operates.
Motorists and the general public from Block NN, GG, JJ, HH, LL, P, Y, R, SS BB, DD, and shoppers who visited Batho Plaza were targeted.
Rietgat station commander Colonel Stephina Nkosi encouraged residents to work closely with the police to help combat crime.
“We urge the community to come forward with the information that can help in arresting wanted suspects,” said Nkosi.
“We know that you as residents know these criminals and we need you to help us to fight crime as a collective.”
Danisile Mabena, from the Department of Community Safety, also echoed Nkosi’s sentiments.
He said that members of the community should not be afraid of becoming whistle-blowers against crime.
“We need you to work closely with the police in ensuring that our community is safe,” said Mabena.
Maluleka said store managers and store assistants at Batho Plaza were also told to be more vigilant and always be on the lookout for suspicious-looking individuals in their stores.
During the campaign, community members were also given a chance to engage with the station commander on issues affecting them, especially bad service by officers at the station.
