Smash-and-grab incidents on the rise

The targeted intersections reportedly included the off-ramp to Akasia, from the R80 Mabopane Highway and another intersection near the Bentley’s Country Lodge.

Police in Akasia, north of Pretoria, have warned against an increase in the number of smash-and-grab incidents which have occurred in the area.

Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli said most incidents had occurred along Brits Road.

The targeted intersections reportedly included the off-ramp to Akasia, from the R80 Mabopane Highway and another intersection near the Bentley’s Country Lodge.

Mdluli added that an increase in truck hijackings had also been recorded.

“Scammers target companies which rent out trucks and when they deliver, they get hijacked,” she said.

TLB vehicles were also reportedly being targeted.

“These hired trucks are usually from Kempton Park and Benoni and other areas in Johannesburg,” she said.

Mdluli added that these crimes were expected to continue increasing, particularly the smash-and-grabs, as it was now winter.
