Tshwane’ gears up for phase 2 Covid-19 vaccination

Over 3 000 individuals have been vaccinated in private and public sector in the first week of the Covid-19 phase 2 vaccine roll-out.

After the initial week of the Covid-19 vaccine phase 2 roll-out, Tshwane metro was confident over the programme aimed at large numbers of people in the region.

About 3 711 people were vaccinated by Thursday (20 May), in the region in the public and private sectors, including those 60 and above and the completion of vaccination of 39 359 health workers not covered during the first phase.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said of the 77 726 health workers in public and private sector targeted for vaccination during phase 1, 38 367 were vaccinated and the remaining would be vaccinated in the course of phase 2.

He said the health department received several positive feedback messages from community members who have received the vaccines thus far.

“Tshwane first received 2 340 doses of Pfizer vaccine on 15 May. Weekly delivery of vaccines will continue,” he said.

“Planning for the vaccination roll-out in Tshwane district is ongoing and health department staff are working continuously to ensure that the sites that are operationalised are ready and well organised.”

Phase 2 aimed at those aged 60 and above will be incorporated with the phase 1 B vaccinating remaining health care workers, traditional health practitioners and staff employed at funeral parlours.

“Total number of vaccinations given by 20 May in Tshwane district was 42 078 (including 38 367 vaccinated Sisonke project for health care workers). This data include healthcare workers vaccinated from 17 May (and the elderly people).”

Since phase 2 roll-out started, Bokaba said several elderly people walk-ins who were not registered on the electronic vaccination data system (EVDS) were observed.

“Those that were not registered were assisted so that they can get their vaccination dates, most of them indeed required help with registration. They were accompanied by relatives which also helped with the elderly who have no phones.”

Bokaba urged residents struggling with registering to seek assistance at the metro’s vaccination points.

He said that registration before vaccination was necessary to ensure vaccines administered aligned with the number of people scheduled on the health online system.

Tshwane health MMC Sakkie du Plooy said with the recent addition of nine vaccination points, he believed the roll-out would go much faster in the region.

“Till 24 May, overall vaccinated elderly aged 60 and above were 781 (in Tshwane metro clinics) and we expect this number to increase with more vaccination points added,” he said.

“I visited the FF Ribeiro clinic vaccination point to see how the roll-out was like. I think they were extremely organised. There were runners taking people from point A to B and 10 nurses doing the vaccination.

“I spoke to a few people at the centre and they were quite excited and satisfied. There were no hiccups. Statistics are well kept and they know how many people they expected to assist.”
