Metro cops spring to aid of motorist with spiked tyres

The motorist had reportedly driven into something which looked like plastic when he heard the puncture.

Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) members sprung to the aid of a motorist who was left stranded after their vehicle was caught in a spike trap along the N4 highway on Tuesday.

Members were patrolling the N4 highway when they noticed a vehicle had stopped on the side of the road with its hazards near the Solomon Mahlangu Drive off-ramp.

Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the TMPD officers quickly rushed to check what was happening.

Mahamba said it was when they checked what had happened that they discovered that the tyres had been spiked.

“One of the vehicle’s tyres hit the spikes that were placed on the road. The officers called for back-up to check for criminals that could still be nearby as the motorist was fortunately not robbed,” he said.

“The nearby area was searched but no one was found.

“The officers then assisted the motorist to change the tyre,” Mahamba said, adding that the motorist explained to the officers that he had driven into something that looked like plastic when he heard the puncture.

“Well done to the TMPD constable for his swift response.”

Mahamba reiterated that they had previously warned motorists to be more vigilant when driving along the N4 highway due to the escalating crime trend where vehicles were being spiked along major routes and freeways.

“These spikes are usually placed by criminals to force vehicles to stop. Motorists are then attacked by these perpetrators, especially at night and in the early hours of the morning,” he said.

Routes that were reportedly usually targeted were highways and quiet roads.

“The TMPD would like to again warn motorists to be extremely vigilant, especially when driving at night and in the early hours of the morning. We will continue to prioritise patrols along such roads,” he said.

No arrests have been made regarding this incident thus far.

Those with further information surrounding this crime were urged to contact the TMPD on 012-358-7095/7096.
