Various organisations host Child Protection Week
"Parents should also make sure that there's at least someone older to take care of children at home and also make sure that their children have a means of contact during times of emergency."
Rietgat police, together with other stakeholders such as the Department of Health and local crèches, observed the Child Protection Week at Sibongile Early Learning Centre in Soshanguve Block FF on Wednesday morning.
About 170 children attended the event, according to police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.
They were taught to always be vigilant against bullying, sexual assaults, child abuse as well as child trafficking.
“National Child Protection Week is commemorated in the country annually to raise awareness of the rights of children,” said Maluleka.
Maluleka said the campaign was led by the Department of Social Development in partnership with key government departments and civil society organisations rendering child protection services.
“It is against this backdrop that issues of abuse, violence and exploitation of children are given attention. As part of proactive measures, the station would like to send a clarion call for the protection of children of all ages.”
Maluleka said the station further encourages parents to make sure that children are safe – especially during this Covid-19 period where children are rotating at schools and at times they find themselves alone at home while parents are away due to work commitments.
“Parents should also make sure that there’s at least someone older to take care of children at home and also make sure that their children have a means of contact during emergencies.”
