West nursing home residents receive Covid vaccination

"A total of 70 elderly people received the injections in extremely professional handling from trained nursing staff."

Holy Cross nursing home, based in Suiderberg, Pretoria West, was the first non-medical station vaccination site to receive Covid-19 vaccine inspections last week.

This was according to local ward councillor Frik van Wyk.

“A total of 70 elderly people received the injections in extremely professional handling from trained nursing staff.

“I am incredibly grateful that these senior citizens in ward 55 were able to receive the first injections,” Van Wyk said.

He wanted to encourage all residents over the age of 60 to receive the injections.

“We are questioned by social media about all the opinions of the vaccine, but it remains your duty to yourself and fellow human beings,” he said.

Nurse Clara Mogemi, who had been working at the home since 2014, said they were truly blessed to receive the injections.

“Since the vaccination process, none of our residents have been complaining of side-effects.

“We are very pleased with the vaccinations.

“Our residents are now protected to a certain extend,” she said.

She added that they were “lucky and privileged that God protected them and had not lost any residents due to Covid-19”.

Holy Cross Home was established in 1984 as a response to the need for an old age home for the Holy Cross Sisters. However, from the onset, it has been a home to many elderly, sick and destitute people.

It was registered as an old age home for 64 persons, a non-governmental organisation, subsidies by the Department of Social Welfare.

In 1994, being true to the gospel, the teaching of the Catholic church, and the spirit of the founders, the home changed its admission policy.

“Our doors opened to all those who were in need of our services, irrespective of colour, culture or religious beliefs. The home changed from being an old age home to being a frail care centre,” Mogemi said.
