Protect yourself during an online delivery
Tracker South Africa gives consumers advice on how to protect themselves and delivery personnel
The coronavirus pandemic has increased the use of online shopping. People can easily get things delivered to their homes without the hassle of going to shops and risking contracting the virus.
This has caused a huge increase in the use of courier companies since the beginning of 2020. For criminals, this is an opportunity for mischief.
It is reported in the latest crime statistics by the South African Police Services (SAPS) that in the first quarter of this year, 354 courier trucks or vans were hijacked.
This means that four courier vans or trucks are hijacked daily in South Africa. Courier vehicles usually transport food, clothing, home appliances or technical gadgets.
Hijacking syndicates target these vans because they are aware that the drivers are usually unarmed.
Tracker South Africa is has identified ways that customers can protect themselves if ever being caught in a difficult situation upon delivery. Firstly, always make sure the driver matches the description of the one who shows up on your app.
This can help Tracker and courier companies trace the steps of their drivers if they need to be held accountable. Once you have ordered your items, you receive a delivery date. Use that as an opportunity to be prepared for delivery on the day.
If a large item is being delivered, let the delivery person into the yard to avoid attracting attention. Or you can receive the goods as quickly as possible. Always be vigilant of anything or anyone that might seem suspicious.
Do not be scared to double-check with the driver if he/she are who they say they are. Check for any vehicles that seem suspicious. Be smart when handling your money. Do not hold large amounts of money in front of drivers.
Also, try to pay online to avoid having to pay on delivery.
“During a delivery, if something doesn’t seem right, or it feels unsafe, trust your gut,” said Duma Ngcobo, Chief Operating Officer at Tracker South Africa.
Try to co-operate if you are caught in a bad situation. Always try to remember as many details as you can so you can report the incident immediately. Always remember that your life is more valuable than goods.
“Try to ensure someone in the house observes your interactions with delivery personnel so they can request help if necessary. Consider subscribing to Tracker CareGuard, a rapid mobile emergency response that enables you to request immediate armed response assistance wherever you are, by simply dropping a location pin in WhatsApp.”
