Two women arrested for robbing Centurion teen

That was when they pulled away and jerked my child off her feet while driving off with her phone. She was flung through the air. She was injured and extremely traumatised.

A teenage girl (17) was robbed of her cellphone on Sunday afternoon in Centurion by two women in their thirties, who have since been arrested by Lyttelton police.

The mother of the girl said her daughter was walking to a shop in Doringkloof when she was approached by two women in a motor vehicle that stopped next to her in the road.

“They told my daughter that they have run out of petrol and needed to make a phone call. They asked whether they could use her phone to make said call.

“My daughter told them she doesn’t have airtime and that they could only send a message.”

The mother said her daughter “saw their intention and tried to hold on to her phone and even tried to grab the car’s key from the ignition”.

“That was when they pulled away and jerked my child off her feet while driving off with her phone. She was flung through the air. She was injured and extremely traumatised.

“I was not home when it happened. Our street captain and community group assisted my daughter. I returned the following day. We went straight to my neighbour to enquire whether he had footage of the incident on his security cameras.

She said her neighbour had indeed had footage of the incident. They drove to Lyttelton police station where they opened a case.

Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said detectives followed up the information the following day.

“They arrested two female suspects in their early thirties involved in the situation. They have already appeared in court on charges of common robbery,” Miller said.

“We are currently investigating linking them to other incidents in the area as well.”
