Ditshego receives generous donation from Cornwall Hill College’s matrics

“We were informed that 11 shacks burnt down last weekend in Mooiplaas informal settlement and were pleased to have learned that all 11 families could be assisted from the donations that we handed to Ditshego House of Laughter on Friday.

Ditshego House of Laughter in Centurion received a generous donation from Cornwall Hill College on Friday.

Nicky Herbst, Ditshego board member, said “it is the second year in a row that our organisation has been blessed by Cornwall Hill College”.

“Donations received included 1 150kg of mielie meal, rice and samp, 356 tins of food, 234kg of linen, towels and blankets, 29kg of toiletries, 36kg miscellaneous items, 2 235 disposable nappies, 425 pairs of shoes and 1 100kg of clothing.”

Herbst said Ditshego House of Laughter is a registered NPO in Raslouw.

“Our vision is to bring about meaningful change in the community of Mooiplaas or Mooiplaas Spruit informal settlement. We specifically focus on the children of the community and the environment in which they live.”

“The needs of this community have been accelerated rapidly since the start of the Covid pandemic and we rely heavily on contributions from generous donors,” Herbst said.

“This seems to have now started as an annual tradition for Cornwall Hill College, whereby a healthy competition is held between the various matric classes and staff, and this year supported by the preschool too.

“On Friday we received almost double the quantity received from the 2020 matrics. We are deeply grateful for the support of this project.”

She said the learners seemed to have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this initiative, learning how to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.

Jenny Koster, matric teacher of Cornwall Hill College, said the matric class of 2020 started the initiative last year.

“During lockdown they collected 1 500kg of food and clothing. We decided to do the same with this year’s matric group. They collected 2 600kg of food and clothing in six weeks.”

Koster said the school “has now committed to donate annually to Ditshego House of Laughter as an annual matric fundraising project”.

“We have been informed that 11 shacks burnt down last weekend in Mooiplaas informal settlement.

“We were pleased to have learned that all 11 families could be assisted from the donations that we handed to Ditshego House of Laughter on Friday,” Koster said.
