Snakebite survivor’s family in horrific accident

WARNING: NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS: Pregnant mother uninjured in accident, while child (2) was seriously injured and 35-year-old dad in critical condition.

A Pretoria family were excited for a pregnancy scan when their trip to the doctor ended in a horrific accident.

Snake bite survivor Mikayla Robbertse’s dad, pregnant stepmom and two-year-old sister were involved in an accident on the Old Warmbad Road on Saturday around 07:00.

Grandmother, Charmain Wilson Robbertse, said her son Lampies (Lambertus), 35, is in critical condition.

Lampies, his wife Riekie and their daughter Luzandra were on their way to a doctor’s appointment.

“Riekie was going in for a pregnancy scan,” said an emotional Charmain, adding that a vehicle, overtaking another, had crashed head-on with the family’s car.

“Lampies told Riekie to ‘get down’. He got the full impact of the crash and went through the windscreen of the car.”

Charmain said Lampies’ injuries were extensive and included a crushed pelvis, broken femur and pelvic bones.

“He also has internal injuries, including lacerations on his liver,” said Charmain with a breaking voice.

Little Luzandra suffered injuries to her leg and ear, with a few other lacerations.

“She will be okay,” said Charmain in a more steady and assured tone.

“It was a miracle straight from above that Riekie did not even have a scratch on her and that her unborn child is also safe.”

Rekord previously wrote about Lampies’ other daughter Mikayla, now 15-years-old, who was bitten by a snake in 2011.

After enduring more than 37 operations, Charmain said Mikayla was doing well.

“I just won’t have the heart to face her, should her dad not make it,” Charmain said tearfully.

“The doctors said it was a good sign that he spoke to them. He kept asking whether Luzandra, Riekie and the baby were okay.”

Messages of encouragement and prayers for the family have streamed in on social media.
