Communities urged to prevent domestic violence

The police blamed the alcohol abuse and said it must be avoided because you don't solve problems when you are under the influence of alcohol.

Mamelodi police have urged the community to prevent domestic violence at all cost.

The call came after police noted a concerning increase in the number of domestic violence cases including that of assaults and malicious damage to property in their policing precinct.

Spokesperson Captain Johannes said these cases were mainly found to be caused by family conflicts over family houses and relationships where infidelity was suspected.

“The issue of alcohol abuse must be avoided and people don’t solve problems when they are under the influence of alcohol,” said Maheso.

“What is concerning is that these disputes or conflicts are not resolved in a sober state but solved in times when parties are under the influence of alcohol.

“The police would like to advice our communities to follow the right procedures in resolving their problems,” said Maheso.

“Firstly, in property conflicts, families should approach the courts to seek assistance in advising as to who is the legal owner of the house in cases of death.”

Maheso said homeowners who were still alive should consider setting up a will which can be made at either the bank or at court to mitigate conflicts in case of death.

Relationship problems are part of our daily lives and no one is immune to them.

“There are social workers, church pastors and family meetings that can be approached for assistance in such situations,” he said.

He said it was “very concerning” that when these cases were reported and ended up in court, some parties would withdraw these cases.

Maheso said that prevention was better than cure and that the police wanted to break the silence of domestic violence.
