MMC urges communities to be on guard when socialising

This as the Tshwane metro had added Stanza Bopape Community Centre, as another vaccination site to boost its other 19 sites.

Tshwane health MMC Sakkie du Plooy has urged community members to “not let their guard down” against Covid-19 when socialising.

“Community members are reminded to practice basic Covid-19 precautionary measures daily, specifically when socialising in groups, as it seems that community members are letting their guard down when they are socialising.”

Du Plooy said as the metro was implementing various strategies to combat the spread of the disease, “the co-operation of community members in adhering to non-pharmaceutical and other interventions will be a crucial factor in combating the spread of the disease”.

He said covering the nose and mouth with a mask, adhering to social distancing rules and adhering to the limitations when attending large gatherings was essential in the third wave.

Du Plooy said the Tshwane health department, in consultation with many other stakeholders, was also ensuring that the metro had a continuation of routine health services.

He said in the fight against the virus, the metro was doing the following:

– Strengthening screening and testing services available at all health facilities; and
– Embarking on health promotion activities, including information on the importance of non-pharmaceutical measures to prevent the spread of the disease, information on the vaccine roll-out plan and on the registration process for community members over the age of 60 years.

He said the metro was also deploying officials to check compliance at various areas.

“Offices and workplaces among others are visited and reviewed for compliance. The aim of these visits is to ensure that corrective actions are put in place to address non-compliance and limit the spread of the disease.”

The metro has added Stanza Bopape community centre in Mamelodi East as another vaccination site to bolster its 19 other sites.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said: “This additional site will give impetus to enhance the city’s vaccination drive for the elderly from the age of 60 and above.”

“This is a remarkable milestone in the City’s fight against this dreadful pandemic,” he said.
