Lyttelton shopping centre evacuated, closed down due to ‘threat’

The violent mayhem that has been spreading through various parts of the country by protesting looters since last week, also flared up in Centurion today.

Olievenhoutbosch resident Thabalo Tlisani reported that protestors looted Shoprite in Olievenhoutbosch on Monday morning.

Another resident from Olievenhoutbosch, Ronnie Nkonwani, found old rubber bullets, “which had been turned into stun grenades”, on the scene.

No incidents occurred in the rest of Centurion and it was business as usual.

On Monday afternoon, however, Centurion mall, shops in Lifestyle shopping centre and Mall@Reds closed down as a precautionary measure.

Ward 78 DA ward councillor Peter Sutton said there “was no immediate threat posed at these centres, neither at Forrest Hill shopping centre”.

He said police as well as the South African National Defence Force were on high alert.

Lyttelton shopping centre was evacuated and closed down around 15:30 as word was received that “the looters were making their way there”.

According to a security guard at the premises, they were informed that the protestors “are armed and dangerous”.

“We warn people to stay away from Lyttelton shopping centre.”

Security companies warned residents to stay home.
