Family in sorrow as ‘formidable’ Eersterust granny dies

“She was a pillar of strength to the entire family and a true Proverbs [31] woman."

A beloved Eersterust, Pretoria Moot, granny who died last week – days after being discharged from hospital – would be dearly missed by her family.

Sophy Coetzee (86) passed away at her home on Friday, days after she was discharged from hospital earlier in the week.

“The family is saddened by her passing and said she left an emptiness,” the Patriotic Alliance’s Tshwane regional spokesperson Virginia Keppler said on behalf of the family.

Coetzee made headlines last week, when Rekord reported on how the Eersterust community came to her aid when ambulance services were delayed over violent protests in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria.

The community took matters into their own hands by carrying her out of the house on the mattress of her bed to load her onto the back of a family member’s bakkie, due to the trouble with getting assistance from state ambulance services.

Coetzee was admitted to hospital for a broken hip and dislocated knee.

“She left a legacy of love, peace and hope. She was a formidable woman who also cared deeply for her family,” Keppler said.

The granny was said to have worked as a midwife who had nine of her own children, eight of whom were still alive.

“They will lovingly remember her stern look when she didn’t like something and her beautiful smile when she was happy,” Keppler said.

Coetzee’s daughter Juanita Coetzee Moodie said it was a “huge” privilege to have been by her mother’s side in the last moments of her life.

Moodie had travelled from her Western Cape home shortly before her mother passed away.

“She was a pillar of strength to the entire family,” she said.
