Much-loved Pretoria cardiologist fondly remembered
Dr Melt van der Spuy lost the battle against Covid19 on Friday.

Tributes and fond memories of Pretoria cardiologist Dr Melt van der Spuy streamed in at the weekend. The popular doctor had earlier been diagnosed with Covid-19 and passed away on Friday. Among many messages on Facebook, a video was shared of hospital staff escorting their beloved doctor out in song.
Pretoria paramedic Xander Loubser shared the video and wrote: “Rest In Peace Dr van der Spuy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Medi-Clinic Group.” Linda Strydom of Biokineticists also shared a heartfelt tribute to Van der Spuy. She wrote: “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Dr Melt van der Spuy who lost the fight against Covid-19 on 16 July at the age of 67. He was young at heart and enjoyed an adventurous life. “A Cardiologist who contributed to LSBio in many possible ways, one of our biggest supporters.
An active gym member, since 2014. He had many serious medical setbacks in his life, but recovered time and time again. “He was an avid sports enthusiast and despite many orthopaedic, cardiac and vascular procedures, he continued with his physical activities, as if he was in his 30s. He lived life to the fullest. A Ladies man that lived eccentrically and passionately.
“He conquered the high waves life offered, a truly exuberant man. He enjoyed spoiling the women in his life. With Marguerite at his side he had a new lease on life and even more so enjoyed a very active lifestyle, playing golf, tennis and swimming. “I have known him since 2008 and admired his openness to holistic and alternative approaches to medical treatments.
He was a sociable person and a very approachable doctor who really cared for his patients. I recall with fondness his enthusiasm with all our Year-end functions where he would always dress the part. He loved interacting with our staff and members. “Melt, thank you for your support, during all these years and the example you set, for living in the present moment.
You left too soon…. “Our thoughts go out to Marguerite, your son Stefan and the rest of your family and friends. You will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by your patients and those who knew you.
Rest in peace our friend and doctor. “Regards the LSBio team.”
