Parents must be alert at nursery schools
“People would take their child into the nursery school, and when they return to their vehicles, found that it had been broken into and that handbags or valuables were stolen.”
A security company alerted nursery schools in the Centurion and Pretoria East areas to be aware of suspects who are targeting parents fetching their children from school.
Leon Muller, district manager of Fidelity ADT, said in recent incidents parents were robbed by opportunistic criminals while waiting in their vehicles outside nursery schools.
“The suspects stopped their car next to them, jumped out and grabbed handbags of a few unsuspecting parents and fled the scene.”
Muller said opportunistic criminals steal handbags, cellphones and other valuables.
“If you suspect this is going on, please do not confront the suspects, but call 10111, as well as your security company.
“Remain vigilant. Check your surroundings and keep an eye on pedestrians,” he said.
“Do not wait outside of a gate that must open for you, make sure your hands are not full. Lock away handbags, laptops and valuables in your boot.”
Muller said, should one fall victim to such a crime, “if possible, look for identifying features so that a full description can be given afterwards, and try to get a vehicle registration and description of the car”.
Spokesperson for Lyttelton police Captain Dave Miller, said there “were indeed a few incidents reported at nursery schools of vehicles broken into”.
“People would take their child into the nursery school, and when they return to their vehicles they found that it had been broken into and that handbags or valuables were stolen.”
“It is always a good thing to be alert,” Miller said.
