Hundreds of homeless animals need love and warmth

Animal shelters in the north of Pretoria are desperate for donations to keep animals, out in the biting cold, warm.

Wollies animal shelter had asked help from its community to aid in keeping roughly 700 cats and 700 dogs in their care, warm.

“We need to make sure everyone has enough blankets, hot water bottles as well as to put their jackets on,” said Wollies owner Cilla Trexler.

“If you are cold – imagine how they (animals) feel.”

Trexler thanked members of the community for recent donations of pet food and blankets.

She said online donations, delivered to the shelter were also a massive help.

Trexler asked for continued support from the community and said that cat food, especially, was running low.

One Stop Animal Rescue is also a non-profit organisation in Akasia, working to rehome lost, abandoned and neglected pets.

Owner of the shelter Mandi Luther said since the national lockdown started last year, there has been an influx of animals to the shelter.

“Especially bigger dogs were being abandoned as people moved to smaller homes,” she said.

This week Luther shared on the shelter’s Facebook page that a few animals were happily adopted and out of the cold.

“So glad they are out of the cold. Thanks to all who adopted, it really is the best thing to do,” she wrote on Facebook.

Like Wollies, One Stop Animal Rescue was also a pro-life shelter, which means that is does not put down any of its animals.

The shelters invited members of the public to come and spend some time with the animals to show them some love and warmth.
