The South African Olympic team has had quite a slow start with getting on the medal table but it hasn’t been shy of stellar athleticism and breathtaking moments.
From Pretoria’s own Tatjana Schoenmaker world record breaker, it looks quite hopeful for the South African team moving on.

Here is South Africa’s top 5 proudest moments in the 32nd Olympic Games in Tokyo so far:
– Swimming sensation Tatjana Schoenmaker breaking the 200m-breaststroke Olympic record with a time of 2:19.15 during the qualifiers. She was only 0.05 secs off the world record set in 2013.
– Tatjana Schoenmaker winning the first silver medal for South Africa in the 100m-breaststroke final. Chad le Clos causing quite a scare but successfully qualifying for the men’s 200m butterfly finals.
– South African surfer Bianca Buitendag won the silver medal during the women’s surfing event.
– Schoenmaker and Kaylene Corbett both qualifying for the 200m-breaststroke finals by winning their heats. South Africa’s men’s hockey team causing major upset with what can be seen as a historic victory over team Germany ranked fifth in the world.
– Tatjana Schoenmaker breaking the 200m-breaststroke world record. The world record was previously set by Danish Rikke Moller Pedersen in 2013, with a time of 2:19.11. Schoenmaker claimed gold and set the new world record at a time of 2:18.95. This is also the first time a South African female athlete has won gold for the event since Penelope “Penny” Heyns in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
